This dataset provides annual population estimates for the State of Iowa, and cities and counties in Iowa. It compiles data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division’s Population Estimates Program (PEP). Data is released in Vintage Series, which contain annual population estimates for every year back to the most recent decennial census. Every time the Census Bureau releases a new "vintage", they do not just add a new year of data. They re-estimate every single year back to the last Decennial Census using updated methodology and more accurate administrative records (like final birth/death certificates).
Where available, Intercensal Estimates, which are the official "final" numbers for that decade are provided to facilitate comparing current annual population estimates to previous decades.

This dataset contains county population in Iowa from 1990 to the most current year available. Data from 1990, 2000, and 2010 comes from the decennial censuses while the years in between are produced annually. Caution is urged in making year-to-year comparisons of population estimates. When the Census Bureau releases new population estimates for the current year, it also revises estimates for previous years in the decade. Aggregating multiple years is discouraged.

The county FIPS code is a concatenation of the two digit state number ("19" for Iowa) and three digit county code. State Code is based on INCITS 38:200x, Formerly FIPS 5-2. County Code is based on INCITS 31:200x Formerly FIPS 6-4.
This dataset facilitates adding five Iowa county FIPS codes, and standard short and long name spellings to other datasets. It provide a county reference field containing GNIS codes, three digit county FIPS, and county names using various spellings. Including county FIPS codes in data helps facilitate the creation of county choropleth maps.

This dataset provides population estimate for individuals 16 years and older by employment status for State of Iowa, individual Iowa counties, incorporated places (i.e., cities) and census tracts within Iowa. Population estimates are used to track demographic changes, inform resource allocation, and plan for future needs. Data is from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, Five Year Estimates, Table B23025. The five year data are collected over a period of 60 months for all geographic areas. Estimates are more reliable for smaller areas (under 20,000 population). Values should not be aggregated across multiple variables, geographies, and years. Also, comparisons should not be made between overlapping data collection periods (e.g. 2012-2016 and 2013-2017).
